PROJECT AREA:

PROJECT CATEGORY:

The residence, located on a fairly narrow plot, follows unconventional ways, both to accommodate its extensive building program, and to achieve its desired contact with the environment. The clients’ instruction was to design a residence for their particular lifestyle, as their work is very demanding, the time available to utilize the house is, mainly, on the weekend.

The building was designed to house the needs of a four-member family with young children and at the same time to be able to accommodate 60-70 people, as if it were a communal recreation space. The house is situated in the center of the plot and grows in height, leaving a narrow space of planted lawn around its perimeter, with two larger garden areas at the entrance and in the background. The dominant material is uncoated concrete, which encloses the main units. In some places, this hard skin is removed to reveal areas lined with aged wood, or it recedes, forming strategically placed recesses at various levels, allowing nature to enter the interior. Exposed concrete is a material that, although often used in Greece, has not been so widely preferred by architects until now: in this particular project, after tests, the cement was specially treated so that, with its external aggregates, it appears almost white. The core of the residence is a double-height space on the ground floor, which houses the living room and an office in the loft. Sliding glass panels bring plenty of light into the interior and open views to the long swimming pool, which almost touches the dining area, as well as to a large covered terrace at the back of the property. There, a vertical surface of greenery on the concrete intensifies the garden feel, while next to the entrance is a formation of reeds and aromatic shrubs.

Inside, white and large wooden surfaces dominate, while occasional recesses multiply the planting. Next to the staircase, which leads to the bedrooms, the concrete skin is fragmented into small rectangles, creating a permeable boundary full of light. This peculiar residence, through its manipulations, overcomes the difficulty of the limited outdoor space and seems to be permeated by nature, while maintaining a strong sense of privacy and protection.
