The Colossos Beach Hotel, a representative hotel of the 1970s in the Kallithea area, is being renamed Amada Colossos Resort and redefined from the ground up with the aim of upgrading and modernizing its accommodations and services in terms of interior layout, amenities and building infrastructure. This intervention is the first phase of a wider investment, which includes the exploitation of the unused southwestern part of the site with the construction of a new hotel unit, operationally independent and with high-quality accommodations and services.

During the study, there were a multitude of challenges and issues to be resolved, mainly the lack of sufficiently large outdoor relaxation spaces, the rigid monolithic nature of the central building volume and the intensity of the northern winds in the area. The preservation of the central multi-storey building in the “Γ” shape and its expansion to the east with the construction of a new high-rise building one floor lower was the key to resolving the main points of the study. The element of water is also introduced with the creation of a private shared pool on the ground floor of the new building. By demolishing the individual wings and replacing them with the new building, the creation of a large outdoor relaxation space is achieved, capable of hosting all the outdoor activities of the users. This creates a welcoming courtyard on the southeast side of the single building volume, now protected from the northern winds, where the new large swimming pool is installed, suitably designed, with 3 pool bars to serve all users. Around it, the outdoor areas of the hotel’s common dining and recreation areas (5 restaurants, 4 cafés/bars) are developed in a complex of pergolas, elements water and greenery that form a microclimate of thermal comfort. On the eastern side of the plot, five villas with sea view, private access and terraces with private swimming pools are being constructed.

The creation of surfaces of different levels, colors, textures and transparency and the color grouping of the building’s staircases was decide in order to divide “visualy” (with a  system of boxes sometimes placed in a recess and sometimes protruding and joined together with joints) the big unified multi storey volume of the pre existing building. The new building follows the same morphological pattern as well.

The central entrance of the building complex is maintained in its original position and is highlighted by the construction of a canopy, while the addition of water elements to the green spaces upgrades its aesthetic appeal and improve the local microclimate. At the western end of the existing building, a new building is being built, which is morphologically different from the central building volume of the interior spaces and mainly the guest rooms. Taking into account all the construction data of the existing building, the design was adapted, creating a number of different types of rooms in harmony with modern functional and spatial requirements. The restoration of the central atrium to its original form played a key role in the formation of the interior spaces. The interior atrium runs through all levels above the reception area, providing natural lighting/ventilation to the common areas of the floors and giving a sense of continuity, thus emphasizing the different function a ground-floor indoor swimming pool hosts.

On the northwest side of the new multi-storey building, an outdoor amphitheater with a special service bar is being formed, and in the northern section, various swimming pools with a water park have been installed, to keep the noise away from the rooms.
